Scottie Scheffler is going to be a punchline for some time.
Plenty are having fun with the world’s No. 1 golfer being arrested in a stunning scene before the PGA Championship last Friday, including star 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, who jabbed Scheffler while praising QB Brock Purdy.
“I think he’s definitely getting a little bit more vocal in the building,” Bosa said of Purdy, who is entering his third year in San Francisco. “I don’t think he’s ever going to change, I don’t think he’s somebody that is going to change even when he gets paid next year. He’s a man of faith and he kind of reminds me of Scottie Scheffler, except for … he didn’t get arrested. Just super humble and really good kid and, yeah, he’s definitely famous.”

Scheffler, 27, was detained outside of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., in the early hours of May 17 due to a misunderstanding about traffic flow in the wake of a fatal accident involving a shuttle bus near the course.
He was booked and processed into metro corrections on four charges of felony second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from officer directing traffic.
Scheffler’s lawyer, Steve Romines, maintains his client’s innocence.
“Scottie Scheffler didn’t do anything wrong,” Romines said Thursday. “We’re not interested in settling the case. We will either try it or it will be dismissed. It’s very simple. All the evidence that continues to come out just continues to support what Scottie said all along. This was a chaotic situation and miscommunication, and he didn’t do anything wrong.”
Scheffler competed in the second round of the PGA Championship following his arrest last week and was greeted by fans wearing T-shirts featuring his mug shot. He finished the weekend tied for eighth at 13-under par.
In addition to Bosa, Xander Schauffele — who won the PGA Championship on Sunday — said this week on Barstool’s “Pardon My Take” that a group of friends, including Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Gary Woodland, have been having fun with Scheffler’s unfortunate predicament in their group chat.
They even changed the image for their chat to Scheffler’s mug shot.
“So the boys were heckling Scottie a little bit, just enough,” Schauffele said.
